A MAN is set to raise money for charity by running the New York Marathon - in Hamilton!
On November 2, Barry Moore (34), of Blair Atholl Gardens, will tread the full distance of just over 26 miles on an X-trainer machine in the town’s Esporta Health Club.
Barry said: “Due to a serious knee injury sustained years ago when I was playing football, I am not allowed to pound the streets or run on treadmills.
“So I came up with the idea of attempting the equivalent of the marathon on the X-trainer at Esporta Hamilton on the very same day as the New York Marathon.
“My mother Anne works at St Andrew’s Hospice a half day a week, so I chose this as one of my charities.
“My uncle, Maurizio Puricelli from Carluke, was diagnosed with terminal cancer of the lung earlier this year, so I also chose Cancer Research UK.
“I wanted to try and put a little bit back in and help out in a small way.”
Barry is employed as the Scottish sales director of London-based company Paragon Sports Management.
His father, Kevin Moore (57), who operates Hamilton business consultancy firm Business Therapies Ltd, and sister Coleen (31), are among those who are supporting him in his charity effort.
Barry said: “I reckon it will take me between four and four-and-a-half hours because I can run about nine or 10k an hour at the moment on the X-trainer.
“I have been working on a 14-week fitness programme from the British Heart Foundation which was recommended to me by a work colleague in London.
“He used it to run the London Marathon.
“I think Esporta are going to organise something to support me when I am doing the marathon by encouraging other gym users to join in.
“Some of my friends have also said they are going to come along and hopefully run an hour with me.”
