Hamilton Sports Trust to fund promising 2014 athletes

HAMILTON International Sports Trust is to provide a £25,000 boost to amateur sportspeople over six years in a bid to help them achieve glory at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The Trust, which has been supporting amateur sportspeople in the former Hamilton district for over 20 years, has set up a ‘fighting fund’ of around £25,000 to help fund the most promising amateur athletes in their quest for success.

Suitable candidates in the Hamilton area who are, or are potentially, of international standard in a recognised Commonwealth sport will be given financial support over the next six years.

Trust secretary Hugh Waters explained: “The plan, over the period, is to support ambitious sportspeople who have a real chance of making it to the Games – current internationalists, members of Scottish squads, or who have the potential to become a member.

“Regular funding would be given to them to support costs they incurred whilst training or participating at international level, which would help sportspeople focus on their sport and boost their performances.”

Those seeking funding must already be at international level in a sport which has been included in the Commonwealth Games, and must be a resident in the old Hamilton district area.

People who feel they meet the criteria are urged to get in touch and stake their claim for funding.

When applications have been received, a panel of Trustees will hold interviews to determine who will receive the funding.

Anyone who wants to apply for the funding should contact Hugh Waters, HIST secretary, on 01698 476154.
