Council pay £347,000 for land to build roads depot

COUNCIL chiefs are set to pay almost £347,000 for land that will form part of the site for a new roads depot in Larkhall.

The depot is due to open in 2010 and has been earmarked for the land formerly occupied by Birkenshaw Brickworks, off Carlisle Road.

South Lanarkshire Council’s enterprise committee were yesterday (Wednesday) told that also needed for the project was an adjoining 1½-acre site at 1 Carlisle Road comprising a five-apartment cottage, gardens and field.

Enterprise director Iain Urquhart said it was proposed to acquire the site from Mr and Mrs T Meade for £315,000 exclusive of VAT.

The council have also agreed to pay the current owners £15,000 compensation, removal expenses and Stamp Duty Land Tax in respect of the proposed acquisition of an alternative property.

Council bosses have also agreed to meet the cost of the seller’s legal and surveyors fees.

This amounts to £7000, exclusive of VAT.

A planning application for the depot is due to be submitted to the council this month.

The new facility will replace the current depot in Summerlee Road, Larkhall.

This will in turn be the site of the new Glengowan Primary School.
