CENTRAL Scotland MSP Christina McKelvie has welcomed an Asda initiative on responsible alcohol retailing.
On a visit to the Hamilton branch of the supermarket on June 20, the SNP member was told of the steps the retailer has taken to cut down on irresponsible alcohol sale and consumption.
Asda have extended their Challenge 25 proof of age scheme after a successful pilot in Scotland and have removed high-alcohol, fruit flavoured ‘shooters’ from sale.
The retailer have also invested £1m into youth projects aimed at reducing underage drinking.
Commenting on these measures, Ms McKelvie said: “I welcome Asda’s commitment to helping the welfare of our young people by seeking to address the issues which can arise from alcohol misuse.”
Guy Mason, the store group’s public affairs manager, said: "We know how seriously the Scottish Government takes this issue.”
