Students weigh in to brighten the lives of care home residents

A TOP team of Motherwell College students taking part in a Prince’s Trust personal development course has brightened up the lives of two communities – St Mark’s Primary, Blairbeth, Rutherglen, and Abercorn Care Home, Hamilton.

The team members were based with the Rutherglen Prince’s Trust and had to tackle various challenges to pass their course.

The pupils at St Mark’s Primary had a school hut in need of some serious restoration work and residents at Abercorn were needing their outdoor garden brightened up.

It took two weeks to bring the school hut back into circulation — working in dreadful April showers — but staff and pupils agreed it was worth it.

For Abercorn Care Home, the team had to create a sensory garden – one where scents, sounds, colours and textures are all equally important.

To buy plants, pot, paint and a birdbath, the team helped to bag pack at ASDA, Toryglen, and raised over £300.

With that, they bought all the materials they needed to meet their challenge.

Collette Pearce, of Abercorn Care Home, said: “On behalf of the all the staff and residents, we would like to thank Prince’s Trust Rutherglen for choosing to work on our resident’s garden.”
