Five detained after sniffer dogs search woodland

FIVE people were detained after police used sniffer dogs to track down drugs in Hamilton.

The five were quizzed after a quantity of drugs are understood to have been seized at a secluded woodland area near Udston Road.

Officers along with tracker dogs searched the area for several hours last Friday afternoon in a bid to find the drugs and other clues.

A number of police cars, unmarked CID vehicles and a police van used for the sniffer dogs were parked on the road beside the wooded area.

The area was searched thoroughly and a quantity of drugs are understood to have been found there.

The value and type of drugs have still to be confirmed.

Five people were detained and later released pending further police enquiries.

Chief Inspector Tom Aitken, of Hamilton Police Office, said enquiries into the incident are still ongoing.

“We found a number of items believed to be drugs,” he said.

“But we need to wait for them to come back from our labs to find out exactly what they are.

“No arrests have been made and our enquiries are continuing.

“The five people who were detained have been released pending further police enquiries.”

Chief Inspector Aitken said he used the sniffer dogs to help with the investigation because they were available at the time.

“We had the opportunity for assisted police support and that helped us to give a quick response,” he added.
