Fed-up Hamilton family in need of some light relief

Yvonne Hamill and her daughters

A HAMILTON mum-of-two this week told how she has been driven to despair by a street light outside her home.

Yvonne Hamill (39) of Juniper Drive, who moved into her home six months ago said the lights remain on throughout the day.

And one, directly outside her home, flickers on and off every two minutes.

Mrs Hamill, a secretary at Hamilton Motorcycle Services, lives with husband David (41) and daughters Megan (10) and seven-year-old Nicole.

She said: “It is so annoying; it just does not stop. I even timed it to see how regular it was flicking on and off. That’s how mad it is driving me. It has been doing this constantly for the past six months, it’s like a blooming disco outside my home!

“I have made somewhere in the region of 30 to 40 calls to various people to find out who is responsible for fixing the light and I have just been told to contact someone else every time.

“I am just so fed-up with the whole thing and I want it sorted as soon as possible.”

Mrs Hamill has even resorted to “shaking” the light to see if she could make it turn off.

She also asked a delivery driver if she could use his van to stand on so she could find out what the problem is.

She added: “We are all supposed to be trying to become more green and more aware of the energy we are using up, yet whoever is responsible for this is allowing the lighting to be on all day every day, which cannot be good for the environment.”

Normally, street lights are maintained by councils but it appears South Lanarkshire Council have not yet adopted the system in Mrs Hamill’s street.

It’s been claimed that responsibility for fixing the problem lies with the house-builders Miller Homes.

A spokesman for the company said: “We are well aware of the situation at Juniper Drive and work is scheduled to take place within the next two weeks.

“The reason for the lamp posts staying on is that the cabling has not been completely installed and one lamp post has still to be erected.”
