TRADERS in North Lanarkshire were this week praised after refusing to sell cigarettes to under-agers.
Tading Standards officers were delighted when all traders tested during the most recent purchase exercise refused to sell cigarettes to 15-year-old volunteers.
Officers were also pleased that the majority of retailers asked for proof of age before refusing the sales.
Dave Roderick, trading standards manager, said: "The results make for better reading and I am satisfied that traders are taking their responsibilities seriously by asking for identification when in doubt over the age of customers.
“No sales out of 12 attempted purchases is heartening. One of the premises was visited for a second time having previously sold to our young volunteers and had patently taken on board my officers warnings and education message.”
