A NUMBER of events and activities will take place throughout South Lanarkshire during Adult Learners’ Week 2008.
Taking place from Saturday, May 17, to Friday, May 23, the aim is to promote education and training for adults; provide access to information and guidance; motivate more adults to participate in learning, and celebrate their learning achievements.
In the Hamilton area, events begin on Monday, May 19, at Netherburn Primary School, where a committee skills course will run from 9am until 11am. For further details on this event, phone Anne Harvey on 01698 452754.
Later that day, a parent and children’s keep-fit session will be held at St Mark’s Primary School from 3pm till 4pm. This will give participants a chance to sample a variety of keep-fit techniques.
A celebration of learners’ achievements will take place at the Whitehill Neighbourhood Centre from 7pm until 9.30pm. This is being run by the community learning service, tel. Anne Harvey on 01698 452154 for further details.
On Tuesday, May 20, events continue with a South Lanarkshire College stand at Hamilton Town House from 11am until 3pm. This will give details of courses and opportunities available at the college and is a must for anyone considering further or higher education. A representative from South Lanarkshire College will be on hand to offer advice on courses and other options.
A Youth Literacy Resource workshop will take place at HIPY from 9.30am till 12.30pm. The workshop will offer information, tips and activities for youth workers from the voluntary sector to use in everyday practice. Robert Smillie Primary School, Larkhall, is the venue of the next event being held the same day from 1.30pm till 3pm. The Home School Partnership are giving parents and carers the opportunity to brush up literacy skills and participate in a programme tailored to each individual’s learning needs. Wednesday, May 21, looks set to be another jam-packed day, with numerous events taking place.
A Get Creative workshop will take place from 1pm till 2pm at Blantyre Library, where participants will have the opportunity to learn to be creative using a computer.
At Hillhouse Library another IT session will take place from 10am till noon. This is geared towards those who are terrified of computers and booking is required due to limited spaces. Christine Calder will provide further details on 01698 286138.
HIPY are hosting a Cooking in the Great Outdoors workshop, which includes training and tips for cooking outdoors. This event will run from 4pm till 6pm on Wednesday, May 21.
Adult Learners’ Week continues on Thursday, May 22, with an awards ceremony for adults who have recently completed a certificated first aid course. This will take place from 1pm till 3pm at the Carers Centre, 46 Campbell Street, Hamilton.
An Eastern European Cultural Awareness event will take place that evening from 7pm till 9pm to promote different European cultures through various activities. This will take place at Trinity High School’s Muir Street Campus, Hamilton. For further details, phone Asha Mallik on 01698 452154.
A youth drama project, Celebration of Learning, and presentation of certificates will take place at HIPY from 6.30pm till 8.30pm. This will celebrate some of the achievements of the group and will premiere a DVD. This event is by invitation only.
Internet for the Terrified is a course being run at Hillhouse Library from 2pm till 4pm which focuses on improving IT skills. Places are limited and booking is essential. For further information, phone Christine Calder on 01698 286138.
