POLICE removed 55 deadly weapons from the streets of South Lanarkshire during a four-week blitz on knife crime.
Officers stopped and searched almost 2000 people during the crackdown against violent crime and gang culture.
A total of 31 gang members were reported to the procurator fiscal.
Officers also confiscated booze from more than 30 under-age drinkers during this period.
Figures released by police show that violent crime in South Lanarkshire was reduced by 9.7 per cent for the month of March, compared to the average figure for the month over the past five years.
Chief Inspector David Craig, campaign against violence co-ordinator based at Hamilton Police Office, said: “We are determined to take knives and weapons off the streets and delighted at the success achieved during the first phase of the campaign against violence.
“However, we will not become complacent and will continue our relentless approach with our partners during the current phase of the campaign, which focuses on weapons.”
Chief Superintendent Tim Love said: “Our approach so far is clearly helping to drive down violent crime in the area and helping to make communities safer.
“While the next phase of the campaign focuses on weapons, many of the aims and issues identified during the gangs phase remain relevant and pertinent.”
Anyone who wishes to report a knife crime, or people who carry weapons, should contact Hamilton Police Office on 483300, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
