NHS Lanarkshire this week made it easier for people to access its Stop Smoking service.
All people have to do is phone 08452 17 77 07 or text “Advice” to 81066.
“It works!” is all about promoting a new phone number and new centralised one-stop shop for people who want to quit.
It was unveiled at Motherwell Football Club on Tuesday with the support of Motherwell central defender Mark Reynolds.
Lanarkshire has one Scotland’s worst records for smoking-related illnesses.
Doctors are especially concerned about the numbers of pregnant women and teenagers who smoke.
Elspeth Russell, NHS Lanarkshire’s Assistant Health Promotion Manager, explained that she and her Stop Smoking colleagues have devised the simple “one-stop shop” based on evidence from a successful London project.
She said: “You can refer yourself and join a local group straight away. It’s free. You don’t need to go through your GP. You can attend any group that’s convenient for you, wherever you live or work.”
Groups are held on a weekly basis for six weeks with two follow-up sessions.
There is support and advice from trained advisors as well as home support for the housebound, telephone support and advice and assistance in hospital.
