Philatelic Society bring their season to a close

LANARKSHIRE Philatelic Society enjoyed an evening of much variety last Friday for their ‘Five Sheets or 50 Pence’ meeting.

President Ellen Currie started the evening off with her display of ‘Stained Glass Windows at Mount Stuart on Bute’. The following members then took to the stage: Julia MacLeod (Operas and their Settings); Margaret Allan (Christmas stamps); Philip Morgan-Klein (Friedensreich Hundertwasser, UN 1983); George Graham (Iceland and its Islands); Jim Fulton (Salonika); Robin Wishart (British Locomotives); David Haig (Cinderella stamps of Ankh-Morpork); Albert Tong (British Birds); Gordon Shepherd (Crimean War); Alex Magowan (Rugby Union World Cup 2007); Ken Liddell (The Butchart Gardens, Victoria BC); Jessie Henderson (Offa’s Dyke); Andy Robertson (The Prancing Horse); Mike Cleary (Wilhelm Roentgen, X-Ray Discovery).

After the break, the following displays were shown: David Brown (Robert Burns); Ian Gray (Portpatrick and Wigtownshire Railway); Elsie Miller (Children’s Literature); Terry Woods (Lanarkshire Postal History, surcharge stamps); Bob Eadie (UK Gardens); Ken Norris (Orchids); Sam Sankus (The Language of Tea); Brian Dow (Norway, special cancellations); Chris Moffat (Birds of Malawi); Sheila Sinclair (Language of Flowers); Bill Jardine (Ireland); Alan Rushworth (West Highland Steamer, RMS Fusilier); Eric Ross (Machins); Maureen Mathieson (UN Geneva); Alex Grimson (Postmarks of Early 1800s); Paul McGowan (Minerals); Margaret Lyth (Old Uddingston).

In her vote of thanks, president Ellen Currie praised everyone for their displays. She also thanked Margaret Lyth who organised the evening.

This meeting concluded the 2007-2008 session. Meetings will resume in St Andrew’s Church hall, Hamilton, on Friday, September 5.
