New postal vote security measures

SECURITY measures involving voters who vote by post, or have appointed a proxy to vote on their behalf, are being stepped up.

The Electoral Commission is advising people in Hamilton, who usually vote by post or proxy, to look out for a letter from the Electoral Registration Officer for Lanarkshire, requesting their signature and date of birth.

The officer will be writing to anyone who has a postal vote, or has appointed a proxy to vote on their behalf, from early April.

Voters should return the form as soon as possible to the Electoral Registration Officer.

Anyone who does not return the form will still be able to use a polling place to vote in future elections.

Alternatively, they can reapply for a postal or proxy vote, when they will also have to give their signature and date of birth.

If anyone is in doubt as to whether or not they should have received a letter, they should contact the local Electoral Registration Officer on 01698 476000 or email assessor@southlanarkshire.gov.uk
