PLANS to open a cafe at Hamilton’s Town House are under consideration.
Members of South Lanarkshire Council’s community services committee learned of the proposal last week.
They had approved the recruitment of extra staff for the complex. A venue supervisor and venue assistant are to be taken on at a combined cost of £34,582.
In a report to the committee, councillors were told that the extra staff were needed because of an increase in business at the venue. The report points out that the number of visitors is expected to rise when a system for selling tickets over the Internet is introduced.
It continues: “Whilst only at the feasibility stage, an opportunity to explore the concept of introducing a modest cafe, in what is at the moment the creche, is in progress.”
The Town House’s £9m upgrade was completed in 2000 and the complex has started to attract major touring productions. Two West End shows, “Joseph” and “Blood Brothers”, attracted a total of 12,000 visitors.
