Waste decision is still a load of rubbish

A HILLHOUSE businessman who hit out at fly-tippers dumping waste near his café last month is still waiting for it to be cleared.

In March, the Advertiser reported how Chequers Café owner Alan Barwick (46) was sick and tired of fly-tippers dumping their waste outside his Hillhouse Industrial Estate business.

This week, the Little Earnock man is still waiting for the problem to be solved.

“The rubbish that was dumped outside my café is still there. The landlord of this site insists that the council should uplift the waste as they own the roads, while the council state they do not own the area.

“At the end of the day, my business is suffering.

“I had to move some of the waste myself by hand just so people could come into the café.”

Mr Barwick is fed up with fly-tippers dumping their waste near his café instead of paying for an uplift.

In South Lanarkshire, the council provide free uplifts of special domestic and garden waste.

It is also free for people to take rubbish to designated sites.

However, the authority have to follow national legislation when it comes to businesses.

Under law, traders are liable to pay for the disposal of commercial waste.

But many have decided instead to dump it near Mr Barwick’s café.

A spokesperson from South Lanarkshire Council said: “Hillhouse Industrial Estate is a private industrial estate and the roads are not adopted by South Lanarkshire Council. Therefore, the responsibility lies with the landlord.”
