Starlings rule county skies

THE starling is the most common bird in South Lanarkshire gardens.

The bird was spotted in 58.37 per cent of gardens, with an average of 6.32 birds per garden, in this year’s RSPB Scotland Big Garden Bird Watch which took place in the county.

The second most common bird was the Chaffinch at 5.64 per garden.

A total of 1125 people in South Lanarkshire took part in this year’s event.

Other bird species found in South Lanarkshire gardens included: the house sparrow at 4.18 per garden; blue tit 2.76; blackbird 2.23; greenfinch 1.61 and great tit 1.41.

RSPB Scotland Big Garden Bird Watch organiser Johnathan Osborne said this week: “It’s fantastic that many people in South Lanarkshire helped us to complete the biggest garden bird survey on the planet which was a great success.

“I’m sure everyone that took part realised just how enjoyable it is to appreciate wildlife on their own doorstep.

“We hope that people will make this part of their lives by turning their garden into a home for wildlife.”
