Project has Colin dancing with joy

Colin Fyfe has earned a place on a sought-after dance course

A SHELF stacker at Hamilton’s Asda supermarket has won a place on a prestigious dance programme.

Colin Fyfe is the first person in South Lanarkshire asked to take part in ProjectY.

He will work with top contemporary dance choreographers and perform in shows across Scotland.

Colin (19), who works at Asda part time, is in the second year of a theatre studies and geography course at Glasgow University.

He attended Hamilton Grammar and St John’s Primary and lived in the town’s Fyne Court before moving with parents Margo and David and 16-year-old brother Gary to Blackwood.

More than 50 dancers auditioned for ProjectY and Colin won one of the 25 places available.

The project is the third to be run by YDance, also known as Scottish Youth Dance, who provide courses, workshops and tuition for children and young people.

ProjectY will take place over four weeks from July 7 at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.

Colin said: “We will be working on the creation of four new dances with Andy Howitt, the artistic director of YDance, and guest choreographers from America and Scotland.

“I will be taking part in three of the works, and all four will be performed before audiences in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness during the last week.”

Colin only took up dancing seriously in October, but has been involved in musical theatre since he was 10 and took part in summer and Christmas concerts at Hamilton Grammar.

Colin explained that before joining Asda in October, he worked for two years at Brantano Footwear in Hamilton’s Douglas Park Retail Park.

“Occasionally, when it was quiet at Brantano, I used to practice dance moves between the rows of shoes,” he added.

“But ProjectY is a fantastic opportunity as it gives me the chance to work with top choreographers in the country.”

Colin would like to hear from any South Lanarkshire firms willing to sponsor his participation in the project. It will cost him £700.
