Probation on assault and breach of the peace charges

A HAMILTON man was given probation last week for punching a man and threatening to stab him.

Michael Barghati, of Dykehead Square, assaulted Steven Cuthbertson at Nelson Crescent, Motherwell, on Remembrance Day last year.

Barghati punched Mr Cuthbertson on the body, seized hold of him and struggled violently with him.

He then threatened to stab Cuthbertson and hit him with a baseball bat.

Barghati also committed a breach of the peace by threatening Lorraine Weir before refusing to leave her house in Nelson Crescent on the same evening.

The 32-year-old also drove at excessive speed along Nelson Crescent before colliding with another vehicle.

Barghati admitted all three charges in December.

At Hamilton Sheriff Court last week, Sheriff Vincent Smith sentenced him to 12-months’ probation for the assault and the breach of peace.

Barghati was also fined £240 and his licence endorsed with nine penalty points for the driving offence.
