Insurance man stole £17,000

A VIEWPARK man who embezzled more than £17,000 while working for a door-to-door finance company has been ordered to pay the money back.

Cabbie Darren Cavin admitted taking the money while working as an agent for Provident between August 6, 2005, and November 7, 2006, from his home in Viewpark’s Sixth Street and elsewhere in Lanarkshire.

At Hamilton Sheriff Court last week, Sheriff Shiona Waldron also ordered him to carry out 100 hours’ community service.

She also told Cavin he had to pay more than £10,000 back to his former employer at the rate of £50 per week.

The court was told Cavin had already paid back nearly £7,000 of the money he had embezzled.

Cavin’s solicitor said his client had taken the money after his family had fallen into serious debt.

He told the sheriff court that as a result the family struggled to pay their mortgage and other bills.

After Cavin was caught, he co-operated with Provident and police inquiries into the matter, the defence agent added.

The sheriff court heard that Cavin had managed to embezzle £17,616 by applying for loans in other people’s names without their knowledge.

He would also make legitimate loan applications, but would pocket some of the cash for himself.

The 31-year-old worked for Provident for a year from its Easterhouse base in Glasgow during which time the embezzlement took place.

Provident said this week they pride themselves on their 10,000 agents who travel door-to-door to offer people credit cards and unsecured loans.

A spokesperson for the company commented this week: ““We are grateful to the police who have worked with us to bring this case to a satisfactory conclusion.”
