New chapter begins at village library

UDDINGSTON’S new library was officially opened last week.

Invited guests and councillors gathered together on Tuesday, April 1, for the event.

The new and improved facility on Bellshill Road opened for business at the end of last year.

South Lanarkshire Council education committee depute chairman Alex Allison cut a cake to mark the special occasion.

He said: “Uddingston people are justifiably proud of their heritage and have a fierce sense of identity with the village and its history.

“South Lanarkshire Council have responded to this by bringing heritage and local history very much to the fore in the new building.

“We have also been able to bring many long-hidden history items out into public view and have created an IT environment which will allow Uddingston people to preserve, share and create a permanent record of the heritage of the area for their children and grandchildren.”

Councillors Allison, Mary Smith, Maureen Devlin and Jim McGuigan, Uddingston Community Council and Uddingston Pride representatives, and library users are pictured left at the official opening of the library.
