Justice system in Scotland is in meltdown - MSP Mitchell

A CENTRAL Scotland MSP claimed this week that the country’s criminal justice system was in “meltdown”.

Conservative MSP Margaret Mitchell made the claim after the Scottish Government released statistics for offences committed while anaccused had been granted bail.

The 2006-2007 figures for bail offences, other than absconding or re-offending, for North Lanarkshire (N Division) were 935, and for South Lanarkshire (Q Division) 523.

Figures on not appearing for trial after being given bail were five for N division and three for Q divison.

Mrs Mitchell described the statistics, provided by justice minister Kenny MacAskill in a written answer, as worrying.

She said: “We really do live in a soft-touch Scotland, where the criminal justice system is in meltdown.”
