A SERIES of activities and events aimed at diverting young people away from crime and disorder starts in Blantyre tomorrow (Friday).
`Move the Goal Posts’, a football initiative developed by Strathclyde Police and partners, kicks off with sessions taking place outside TACT Community Hall each Friday and Saturday evening, from 6-10pm, for the next four weeks.
A mobile football pitch will be the main attraction for young people who are invited to drop by, have fun, get fit and impress their friends with their football skills.
Police hope the provision of diversionary activity for youths in the area will reduce violent antisocial crime, help promote social inclusion and facilitate better community relations.
Inspector John Riley, from Blantyre Police Office, said:
This type of initiative really can have a positive effect on local communities by helping reduce youth disorder and providing real alternatives for young people to fill their free time with.
“It also allows all the partners involved to have direct interventions and break down barriers with young people in their home areas.
“As well as the recreational activities on offer, partner agencies such as Streetbase are on hand to give young people information and advice on drugs and alcohol, and to provide an education input on other types of antisocial behaviour.
“By coming along to Move the Goal Posts, we hope that young people will make safer and more informed choices in their day-to-day lives.”
In partnership with Strathclyde Police, the initiative involves a number of organisations, including Centre Spot Development, Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service and Streetbase.
Inspector Riley continued: “By working collectively to address issues which blight local communities, we really can make a difference to the area and improve the quality of life for residents.
“And people should remember this is not only aimed at the young people that join in our activities but the wider community as a whole.”
