Teenager Mark wins volunteering award

VOLUNTEERS from across South Lanarkshire have been honoured at a special awards ceremony hosted by South Lanarkshire Council.

The annual event, held by volunteer group SoLVE, recognises the hard work and dedication of volunteers from across the district.

Provost Russell Clearie MBE, who hosted the event, said: “This wonderful event highlights the fantastic achievements of the army of volunteers of all ages who work tirelessly to make other people’s lives so much better.

"As an active volunteer myself, I know only too well the commitment and dedication that goes into the work you undertake, and believe me the council are deeply grateful for everything you do.”

The award for Young Volunteer of the Year went to Marc Dickson, who volunteers with South Lanarkshire Youth Council and the Scottish Youth Parliament.

Speaking about Marc’s achievements, Ronnie Crichton, from St. Joseph’s School in Blantyre, said: “His honest and reliable approach has brought about positive changes to the community and many young people's lives.”

The runner-up prize went to Stuart Bence, who volunteers with Hamilton Information Project Youth.

Hazel Morrison and Jim Dunn from HIPY, who nominated Stuart, said: “We feel that Stuart goes above and beyond the call of duty to help the groups he is involved in and does not think twice about giving up his free time to help others on a regular basis.”

Anna Carson scooped the runner-up prize in the Long Service category, having volunteered with Samaritans of Lanarkshire for 36 years.

Richard Sempie was awarded Volunteer of the Year for his work with Hamilton Volunteer Group, who he has been with for five years.

A special award was granted to Jessie Smith, who recently turned 80, for her tireless efforts over the last 18 years with the Citizen’s Advice Bureau.
