Police close in on cemetery vandals

POLICE are following a “positive line of enquiry” in the hunt for the vandals who desecrated 130 gravestones in High Blantyre Cemetery.

Last week, the Advertiser reported how mourners were left heartbroken after the stones were vandalised.

The vandalism occurred between 4.30pm and 8pm on June 5, June 12, and again on June 15.

Councillors in the Blantyre area have been contacted over the past few weeks by several worried and outraged mourners.

Police in the town stepped up patrols and are now said to be closing in on the culprits.

A spokesperson from South Lanarkshire Council said no further vandalism had taken place over the past week.

If you have any information on the vandals, please contact Constable Julie Hayes at Blantyre Police Office on 01698 202500.
