Bert backs HSBC turbine move

INDEPENDENT councillor Bert Thomson has welcomed a banking giant’s decision to withdraw plans for two 65ft wind turbines near homes in Blantyre.

Last week, HSBC decided to select another United Kingdom location for the project, previously earmarked for their call centre in Sydes Brae.

Neighbours had complained that the masts would be as close as 100ft to houses.

This week, Mr Thomson commented: “It is great that a large company like HSBC have listened to the people of Blantyre.

“From the outset, residents were against the proposal and the company have now come to their senses. I am also pleased the decision means there won’t be any wasted public money and time by putting the application through planning procedures.”

Residents were concerned the turbines would cause disturbance and interfere with electrical equipment, a claim refuted by HSBC.

The company insisted that the turbines — three blades in a helix arrangement operating around a vertical axis — would save 3.2 tonnes of carbon a year.

A spokesperson from the bank confirmed they had listened to the concerns of residents and decided not to proceed.
