ANGRY anglers reported last April’s pollution incident to the Advertiser.
They discovered that water at the Hoolit’s Nest area of the Rotten Calder looked dirty.
Brown trout, some up to a foot long, were found dead in the river at High Blantyre by the concerned fishermen.
Hugh Whyte, of Dundonald Street, came across dead fish on April 9 last year when he went to the river with his two grandchildren.
He said: “Usually I get a bite when I’m fishing, even if I don’t catch anything, but on that day there was absolutely nothing at all for anglers.
“When I went back the following Thursday the fish were all dead, even the little minnows in the pools.
“There was no smell coming from the water and it looked clear again, but all the fish had died.”
He added: “The last time I remember anything like this happening at the river was about 40 years ago when chemicals ran into the water. It looks like it might have happened again.”
SEPA confirmed to the Advertiser at that time that they were carrying out an inquiry.
