First-year girls on top in dance competition

A GROUP of Hamilton Grammar first-year pupils took first place in the school’s annual ‘Bring It On’ dance competition.

Two Up Two Down, comprising Erin McCullagh, Julie Roberts, Mhairi Hendry and Katy Hazlie, performed a routine to Katy Perry’s ‘Hot ‘n’ Cold’.

They turned in a creative and perfectly-choreographed routine.

This is the third time the school have staged the ‘Bring It On’ competition and Grammar pupils and staff say the standard continues to improve.

The contest is open to pupils of all years, who create routines which incorporate elements of cheerleading, gymnastics and dance.

Each group are given six weeks to perfect their routine and rehearsal sessions are offered every lunch time.

The onus is on pupils to organise rehearsals and agree on stage outfits and music.

Each group have to show teamwork, creativity, commitment and leadership skills.

The latest competition was organised by PE teacher Michelle Moles. Groups performed in front of friends, family and a panel of ‘X-Factor-style’ judges who comprised drama teacher Graham Parry, principal teacher of PE Gavin Gordon and pupil support teacher Moira Morton.

Ms Morton said: “I was so impressed by the quality of the entrants this year.

“Each pupil involved had clearly shown a great deal of commitment to get performances to the highest possible standard.

“Congratulations to the pupils and Miss Moles for organising an event that once again showcased the talent contained within Hamilton Grammar.”

Six groups took part in the show. Runners-up were Dark Angelz (Eilidh Kegg and Rebecca Mair), while third place went to The Divas (Rachel Mackie and Jocelyn Kinnie).

The other groups, Secret Midgets, Rockstarz and Midnight Starz, also impressed the judges.
