Pupils and staff say farewell to teacher

A primary school teacher this week retired from her post at Quarter after completing almost 20 years service in the teaching profession.

Elspeth McKinlay (60), from Hamilton, became a teacher later in her career at the age of 40.

After going back to university and gaining a a degree in education and thereafter her teaching diploma, she undertook supply work for a time in Bargeddie.

She then moved to St John’s Primary School, Hamilton, before, settling into a permanent teaching post at Quarter Primary School.

After a year’s absence due to illness, Elspeth returned to her teaching post

Head teacher at Quarter Primary School Faye McNaughton paid tribute to the work of Elspeth throughout her career.

She added: “The staff, pupils and parents wish Elspeth a long, happy and healthy retirement.

“She will be greatly missed by everyone at Quarter after all these years with the school.

“Elspeth had many strengths in teaching, but she had a particular talent for drama, and organised numerous activities to prepare the children for assemblies, school shows and concerts.

“Elpeth had respect from her pupils, and they always worked hard for her.”

Her P4/5 pupils presented her with a card, and a bouquet of flowers.

The school staff, friends and family also enjoyed a special retirement dinner on Friday to commemorate the event at the Redstones Hotel, Uddingston, where she was presented with jewellery from her pupils.
