Dux medal is back at school

STRATHAVEN Academy were delighted to accept the return of one of their dux medals from the daughter of a former pupil.

The former pupil, Joseph Hyslop, was presented with his medal by Lady Giffen in 1915.

Joseph was born in 1900 and gained a first class honours BSc degree and became a doctor of science.

He was a research chemist and well respected in the fields of ceramics and metallurgy,particularly in the USA where he lectured widely.

Mr Hyslop died in 1986, aged 86.

Elspeth Banks, Strathaven Academy head teacher, said: “The school have expressed their thanks to the daughter of Joseph Hyslop for the gift of her father’s dux medal and recognise it’s special place in the proud history of our school.”
