Pupils enjoy winter sports

SPORTING stars visited a Motherwell primary school this week to help pupils stage a Winter Olympics week.

The programme of events, organised by children at Our Lady of Good Aid Cathedral Primary, was inspired by the success of Team GB in Beijing Olympics.

High-profile Olympian sportsmen who visited the school during the week included runner Yvonne Murray and women’s curling captain Rhona Martin.

Motherwell FC footballers also paid the Park Street school a visit.

Cathedral Primary School head teacher Maria Shields said this week: “We are delighted that sporting celebrities have been keen to come along to work with our children during our Olympics week. We are confident the involvement of such inspirational sporting role models will have a great impact on our pupils’ motivation and will inspire them to adopt and maintain a healthy diet and a positive attitude towards exercise and fitness.”

During the week children were given the opportunity of taking part in a variety of sports and activities which included climbing and curling.

They also took pictures to create a photographic record of their experiences and are due to produce verbal and written reports on their activities throughout the project.
