THREE Clydesdale pupils have won awards in the art-based ‘County Galleries’ project organised jointly by Supercounty (New Lanarkshire Ltd) and South Lanarkshire Education Resources.
Primary school pupils in the district were encouraged to apply their artistic talents to highlight favourite aspects of their local area.
The winning pupils from schools in Clydesdale are Tommy Kemp, a P4 pupil at Crawforddyke Primary School with his piece ‘Sunset over Hamilton’, and Erica Steele, a P3 pupil at Crawfordjohn Primary School with her piece ‘View over the hills’.
A Highly Commended award was also made to Imogen Bose-Ward, a P7 pupil at Lamington Primary School for her piece ‘Wiston Mains Water Mill’.
John Scott, head of Supercounty, explained: “We initiated the project in an effort to make young people aware - and hopefully proud - of their local area, and to take a civic pride in what is happening in their local community.
“We are delighted with the response, both in terms of quantity and quality of the artistic impressions, and hope that the very positive profile generated by their efforts will help generate a knock-on benefit for local communities across South Lanarkshire.
“The initial venture gives us great encouragement to extend this community-based concept into secondary schools next session.”
Councillor Mary Smith, chairman of the council’s education committee, said: “The theme for the competition was ‘Where we are’, chosen to highlight and celebrate the landscape, townscape or environment of different areas of the area. The winners have had their artwork professionally mounted and framed, and they will be displayed at the council headquarters in Hamilton.
