Showcase lets school stars shine

PUPILS from seven North Lanarkshire additional support needs schools showcased their enterprise skills and abilities at a special event in Coatbridge last week.

Bothwellpark and Firpark schools in Motherwell were among those who took part in the showcase – the first of its kind in North Lanarkshire – and displayed their musical, dance and enterprise skills.

The Reach For The Stars event was designed to demonstrate the breadth and variety of the enterprise activities within each school and show off just what the pupils can achieve.

The invited audience was entertained by a band from Firpark School – Charley Barley – which has recorded a four-track CD to raise funds for Tsunami victims in Sri Lanka.

Margery McBain from Firpark School helped organise the event. She said: “This showcase is, we hope, only the start of things to come. These young people are achieving so much on a daily basis and we wanted to recognise that in an entertaining and engaging way.

“The showcase also gave our young people the chance to spend time with each other and for staff members from our schools to come together to share ideas and best practice.

“Ultimately, it was about saying well done to our young people and to show them that their efforts are recognised both within each school and right across the council.”
