First place in poster competition for Niamh

A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD pupil at St Patrick’s Primary School, Strathaven, made a clean sweep in a design-a-poster competition organised by South Lanarkshire Council.

Niamh Gallagher was thrilled to learn that not only had she come first in her category, but she was also the overall winner.

Niamh accepted a magnificent trophy, which will be displayed at the school for the year, a WH Smith gift voucher for the school and a framed copy of the poster.

Niamh also won an individual trophy to keep, an art set and gift voucher.

The design a poster competition was run in conjunction with this year’s Food Safety Week to raise awareness of the four ‘Cs’ – cleanliness, cooking, chilling and cross-contamination.

It captured the imagination of hundreds of primary and secondary school children throughout South Lanarkshire.

Niamh’s winning design will feature on next year’s calendar which could hang on the wall of homes and businesses across the area.

There was a marvellous response to the competition with 29 schools submitting 920 posters.

Councillor Gerry Convery, chair of community resources, said: “I am very pleased indeed to see that so many schools have taken part in the Food Safety Week competition again this year.

“As usual, all of the entries are of a very high standard.

“The children’s enthusiasm for the competition has been overwhelming and if we have got the message across about the importance of the four Cs then they are all winners.

“I would like to thank all of the children and teachers who took the time to design and submit an entry.”

Prize winners in all categories received trophies, art sets and gift tokens with runners up receiving art sets and trophies.

A selection of posters were displayed in libraries throughout South Lanarkshire during Food Safety Week which ends tomorrow (Friday).
