New help for young autism sufferers

PLANS to enhance educational additional support needs will this year be implemented in South Lanarkshire schools.

An additional class for pupils with autistic spectrum disorder is to be established in Robert Owen Memorial Primary, Lanark, from August.

Two additional classes will also be created in Cathkin Primary, Rutherglen, the first in August and the second at the start of the new school session in 2009.

A new base for pupils with general additional support needs will also be set up in Cairns Primary, Cambuslang, from 2011.

Pupils from South Lanarkshire will benefit from these specialist bases.

South Lanarkshire Council leader councillor Eddie McAvoy said: “We wanted to further enhance the provision for pupils with additional support needs and ensure they are met.

“This is being taken forward through our Schools Modernisation Programme, which offers us the opportunity to further develop bases in primary and secondary schools.”

Special autism bases are currently situated at Chatelherault, Hamilton, Robert Owen, Lanark, High Blantyre, Crosshouse and Greenhills primaries and in two secondary schools — Hamilton Grammar and Duncanrig in East Kilbride.
