Final whistle blown on the 'Kick It' football initiative in town

LAST week marked the end of the football programme ‘Kick It’ in the Hamilton district.

The initiative was organised by Strathclyde Police and various local partners over the past 10 weeks.

Police officials, councillors, representatives from partner agencies and parents of the children who participated were invited to the final training session at Hamilton Palace Sports Ground to witness first-hand the good work that has been taking place as part of the scheme.

‘Kick It’ has seen over 30 pupils from St Mary’s Primary School participating in weekly football coaching sessions which have been centred at Hamilton Palace Sports Ground.

Peers from secondary schools delivered the sessions to the primary schools taking part.

On completion of the programme, seven young coaches from Hamilton Grammar, Holy Cross High and Calderside Academy will have successfully gained their Sports Leaders UK “Young Sports Leader” award.

Strathclyde Police Kick It co-ordinator, Constable Kirsty McKinlay, said this week: “It really does make it all worthwhile when you see the young people enjoying themselves, learning from their peers and encouraging each other to do well.”
