Calderside pupils enjoy a variety of successes

A NUMBER of pupils from Calderside Academy have been successful in a broad range of pursuits.

Victim Support Scotland hosted a public speaking competition in the Banqueting Hall of South Lanarkshire Council headquarters recently, with four local schools taking part in the contest.

All pupils spoke about improving justice in school or in the local community.

The judges awarded first place and a commemorative plaque to Calderside Academy.

The winning team consisted of Amy Smith, a pupil in third year and Stuart Love, who is in sixth year.

As winners of this regional event Amy and Stuart will now go on to represent South Lanarkshire schools in a National Competition sponsored by HBOS.

Meanwhile, Ainslie Semple (14), a third-year pupil at Calderside Academy, has been competing in Belgium this week with the East Kilbride Gymnastics Club.

Ainslie will represent the club at an international acrobatic competition and will compete as part of a trio of gymnasts.

Ainslie will also compete in Germany and Poland later this year.

Pupils from Calderside have also been busy at West of Scotland cross country events.

Leanne Black secured an overall third placing in the Under-15 girls section, with Hannah Bain finishing in sixth place while Philip Gerard also achieved a commendable third place in one of the Under-13 boys races.
