THE Advertiser this week begin a regular feature on our primary schools.
We are going to ask teachers to nominate a class worthy of special praise.
That class’s photograph will be printed in the paper alongside an account of why they merit a mention.
Today’s Class Acts are primary six at Hamilton’s St Elizabeth’s Primary School.
The youngsters were nominated by their teacher Siobahn Feeney for their work in producing a monthly school newsletter, the St Elizabeth’s Gazette.
Class members Jan Meinicke, Paul Quirie and Thomas Douglas came up with the idea last autumn.
With the help of pals and children from other classes, they have produced four issues of a four-page newsletter.
They youngsters run off 100 copies of each issue and sell them for 20p each with proceeds being used to cover the cost of printing.
Any money left over goes to charity or school funds.
Miss Feeney said: “Included in the newsletter are articles on events that have been happening in the school, book and film reviews and the school merit marks for that month.
“The back page has jokes and quizzes.”
She added: “It has been a great project.
“The three boys have a lot of ideas and this has given them the chance to go away and do something different from the normal school work. It has improved IT skills and they have learned how to import graphics and use Microsoft publishing.”
The 28 primary six youngsters are aged 10 and 11, and now two children from other classes in the school have been nominated as ‘stringers’ for the newsletter.
l Next week’s Class Acts will be primary two at Woodside Primary School, Hamilton.
