Pupils on Message with green scheme

GLENLEE Primary School and Nursery are to raise funds through a mobile phone recycling project.

The school and nursery have joined a ‘Fones4Schools’ phone recycling campaign to raise cash to buy ICT equipment, scanners, and software for an interactive whiteboard.

It will also be used for their P7 conservation investigation project.

Glenlee will receive £300 for every 200 phones collected, regardless of their age or condition.

In addition, the pupils get to choose prizes for the school.

The more phones the pupils bring in, the better the prize.

Teacher Sorrel Rutherford, said: “The campaign is a fantastic way for pupils to become actively involved in environmental issues.

” To make the campaign as successful as possible, Fones4Schools provide all materials free of charge.

They will also run the campaign, and collect phones at the end.

Registered schools like Glenlee have access to education worksheets, the latest news on recycling and competitions.

As the campaign is ongoing, pupils can take part as many times as they like.

It was launched in April 2004 as a fundraising scheme for nurseries, schools, colleges and youth organisations.

The mobile phones are either recycled or re-used in developing countries where landline networks are unreliable, patchy or non-existent.

Campaign coordinator, Cally Hill, said: “To date we have worked with 6000 schools and groups across the UK who have raised over £1million in prizes and donations.

“The campaign has benefited a number of schools and youth organisations in the Hamilton area, and awareness of the campaign will provide more schools and groups with the opportunity to raise cash and prizes through a simple yet effective fundraising campaign.

” The school is encouraging local businesses to get involved and run a collection to support them.

Any businesses requiring promotional material should call 01625 667857.

Anyone who wants to donate an old mobile can post it to, or drop it off, at Glenlee Primary, Anderson Street, Burnbank, between 8.30am and 3pm Monday to Friday, during term time.
