Enterprising Holy cross pupils design special playing cards

PUPILS at Holy Cross High are ace when it comes to enterprise.

They have designed a special pack of playing cards to mark both the school’s 50th anniversary and their move to the new campus in Bothwell Road.

The cards were the product of a ‘Dragon's Den’ challenge set at the S6 Enterprise Day in November last year.

Teams of pupils pitched their ideas for a commemorative product to a panel of judges made up of business partners, parents, pupils and staff.

The team of young entrepreneurs victorious in the ‘den’ then had to take up the challenge of turning their idea into a finished product.

They had to secure finance by approaching businesses for sponsorship and arrange a fund-raising X-Factor-style talent show for S3 pupils.

S1 and S2 pupils were invited to enter a competition to create a design for the cards. The winning design came from S1 pupil Eve Sullivan.

A sponsor’s logo and collection of images were produced for each suit of cards.

Sponsors, parents, and pupils last Friday attended the launch exhibition in school, and the cards are now on sale, priced at £3 per boxed deck available from the school.

Key contributors to the project were: sponsors — Margaret Hodge Recruitment, AMEC, ZOOM Airlines, and The Entrepreneurial Exchange. Dragons — Caroline Super, Inkspot; James McNulty, EWSL; Margaret Burns, School Board; Cara Halliday, S4; Reece Cribbin, S2; Jim McKinnon, PT Business Education. Advisers — Alan Murray, PSYBT, and Jim Watt, Bell College.

S6 entrepreneurs — James Donnelly, Kevin Carr, Kieran Bicknell, and Mark Patrick. Sales team — Paul Edmond, S1; Kieran Cushley, S4, and Patrick Gaffney, S4.
