Young man critical after car smashes into a wall

A MOTORIST was this week fighting for his life following a horror road smash in High Blantyre.

The 22-year-old was airlifted to hospital after the Toyota car he was driving spun out of control and ploughed into a brick wall.

He suffered serious head injuries in the accident on the B7012 Hamilton Road, near its junction with Stoneymeadow Road and Ellisland Drive, on Saturday at 9.40am.

The man is being treated for his injuries at Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital.

Medics there described his condition as critical.

No other vehicles or passengers were involved in the accident.

One motorist said: “It was a horrendous crash.

“One man went to help the injured driver shortly after the accident. There were other cars slowing down to see what was going on but none of them stopped to offer any help or assistance.”

Police closed off the slip road from the East Kilbride Expressway to High Blantyre for several hours following the accident.

Diversions were put in place and motorists had to travel onto the next exit for Hamilton International Technology Park.

Police this week appealed for witness to the accident to come forward.

A Strathclyde Police spokeswoman said: “Our enquiries are ongoing to establish exactly what happened during the accident.

“No other vehicles were involved in the crash and any witnesses should contact the police immediately. The man is still in a critical condition in hospital.”
