More road misery ahead for drivers

MOTORISTS throughout Lanarkshire are set for more roads misery.

Drivers across Hamilton will next month be affected by major resurfacing work.

The project, which includes resurfacing Almada Street and Douglas Street, will cost £290,000 and is scheduled to begin on Monday,August 4.

The works are part of the authority’s recently-announced £126m investment in its roads network.

The project, which will be carried out in four phases, will take place over two weeks and is programmed for completion prior to the end of the school summer holidays on August 18.

The authority say they are making significant efforts to ensure the essential works can be carried out with the minimum of disruption to road users with closures only taking place over the weekends.

The works will be phased in as follows:

August 4-8 - working on Almada Street between Montrose Crescent and Peacock Cross.

Almada Street will be reduced to one lane during the working day.

August 9-10 - working on Douglas Street between Clydesdale Street and Almada Street.

Douglas Street will be closed to all traffic with local diversions in place via Douglas Street, Caird Street and Bothwell Road.

August 11-15 - working on Almada Street between Guthrie Street and Montrose Crescent (inside lanes).

Almada Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

August 16-17 - working on Almada Street between Guthrie Street and Montrose Crescent (outside lanes). Almada Street will be one-way westbound only, with diversions in place for east-bound traffic via Douglas Street, Caird Street and Bothwell Road.

More roadworks being carried out by Amey at a cost £4.5m affect two key routes in Lanarkshire.

Three different projects are involved and will result in improved journey times and safety on the M74 at junctions 7 and 11 and the A725 close to Strathclyde Business Park.

The first project got under way on Tuesday of this week and will see a 82m section of bridge deck spanning the M74 near junction 7 at Larkhall resurfaced and waterproofed over a 10-day period.

The works will also deliver replacement expansion joints as well as new footpaths and safety fencing.

The second project will see new traffic signals activated this summer on the A725 near the business park.

The lights are aimed at reducing congestion.

Starting in early autumn, the third Lanarkshire project involves the reconstruction of a critical section of the southbound M74 carriageway from Gleck and Bog Bridge to junction 11, south of Lesmahagow.

This is the last of four phases of work to replace concrete carriageway. The first phase was completed in 2006.
