MAJOR roadworks are set to begin this weekend on a two-mile stretch of the M74 south of Lesmahagow. And drivers are being warned to expect delays although contractors say they will strive to keep these to a minimum.
Amey are rebuilding part of the infamous concrete section of the motorway under the project at a total cost of £4.3m.
The work between junction 11, Poneil, and the Gleck and Bog Bridge, is expected to take two months and is likely to lead to lengthy delays at peak times. From 8pm Friday until Sunday night, the motorway will reduce to one lane in each direction while crossovers for contraflow are created.
On Saturday morning, the junction 11 northbound on-slip will close and will remain closed for the duration of the work.
Traffic will run in contraflow on the southbound carriageway (one lane each way) from Sunday night for 56 days, weather permitting. The speed limit through the works is to reduce to 50mph throughout the project.
And this temporary limit will be enforced by SPECS average speed cameras to ensure that the limit is maintained by drivers.
This is the third of four major projects to replace the concrete section of the M74.
The final section is due to be replaced later this year.
