A MAN was this week fighting for his life after he was attacked outside a social club in Lanarkshire.
The 36-year-old, from South Lanarkshire, was assaulted as he left the Cambusnethan Miners Welfare Club, Wishaw, in Woodhall Road, at about 8.50pm on Sunday.
He was taken to Wishaw General Hospital suffering from serious head injuries.
Hospital staff described his condition as critical.
Police are treating the incident as attempted murder and were this week appealing for witnesses.
Detective Chief Inspector Jim King, who is in charge of the investigation said: “This would appear to be a completely unprovoked attack on an innocent man who was heading home.
“Our enquiries are at a very early stage but we believe that there was some sort of disturbance involving a group of men outside the Cambusnethan Miners Welfare Club last night (Sunday). It is possible that the victim inadvertently got caught up in the commotion.
“We have interviewed a number of people who were in the area but still need to trace everyone who was either in the club or general vicinity.
“I would appeal to anyone who was not yet spoken to the police and saw or heard anything that could assist our enquiries to come forward.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact the CID at Wishaw on 01698 202600.
“Alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where anonymity can be maintained.”
