False benefit claim by Motherwell man

A MOTHERWELL man has been ordered by a sheriff to carry out community service after admitting falsely claiming £15,000 in benefits.

William Blair (58), of Lodge Tower, claimed incapacity, income support, housing, and council tax benefits from North Lanarkshire Council and the Department for Work and Pensions during the period between February 2, 2004, and July 16, 2006.

However, at the time he made the benefits claims he was employed as a car valet, a court was told.

Earlier this year Blair admitted carrying out the frauds when he appeared in court.

And at Hamilton Sheriff Court last week, Sheriff Danny Scullion ordered him to carry out 160 hours unpaid community work over the next year when he appeared for sentence.
