A conman sentenced to nine years in prison was caught after calling his mother with a phone he used while defrauding banks of more than £8 million, a police spokesman said.
Frageand Nassem, 32, from Livingston, near Edinburgh, put on fake accents and used a pay-as-you-go mobile to carry out his scam.
Police said he would telephone international companies and dupe staff into giving him information.
