Labour 'fighting' to retain seat

Labour will treat the Glasgow North East by-election contest as a battle it intends to win, Chancellor Alistair Darling has insisted.

No date has yet been set for the by-election, caused by the resignation of the Speaker, Michael Martin.

With Parliament in recess it cannot take place until the autumn, a delay which has led to repeated criticism from the SNP which has repeatedly accused Labour of running scared.
