Council housing lowest for 50 years

The number of council and housing association homes for rent in Scotland is at its lowest for 50 years, campaigners have claimed.

The housing charity Shelter Scotland said there are 599,000 socially rented properties across the country - 18% lower than in 1998 and the lowest figure since 1959.

The organisation has just published a new report, which director Graeme Brown claimed "lays bare the chasm between the number of homes needed and the number available to house Scotland's people".
