Call for separate council elections

Plans to hold council elections separately from the Holyrood ballot will strengthen local government, Parliament minister Bruce Crawford has said.

He told MSPs the measure will help reduce the "voter confusion" witnessed at the 2007 elections.

More than 38,000 council ballot papers were rejected in the 2007 election fiasco which saw a single transferable vote (STV) system of proportional representation introduced for the first time.
