Call for 'centre of excellence'

A report from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers has called for a "centre of excellence" to make the most of Scotland's research strengths.

The report said Scotland's manufacturing workforce had fallen from 475,000 in 1981 to about 218,000.

It said Scotland could not compete with countries like China purely on labour or business costs and a centre of excellence could maximise commercial opportunities from research and development.
