SCOTTISH businesses will be able to choose who supplies their water and sewage services from today.
Around 130,000 business customers are eligible to choose suppliers from three companies licensed by the Water Industry Commission for Scotland (WICS).
The movie does not affect householders, with Scottish Water still continuing to provide service to its 1.5 million customers.
The idea behind the new initiative is that by introducing competition Scottish businesses will be able to get the best value for money.
Sir Ian Byatt, Chairman of WICS said: “A lot of companies have many connections. For example NHS Scotland will have a very large number of connections with each of its hospitals.
“They are now in a position where they can get a bill that includes all the hospitals in Scotland.
“This will also them where they can be more efficient in the use of water and the discharge of waste water.”
He added: “This new scheme will lead to more efficient business in Scotland, improved public service and a better environment.”
To date, five companies have applied for licenses to supply water. They are Satec, Aquavitae, Osprey Water Services , Ondeo Industrial Solutions, and Business Stream (the business arm of Scottish Water).
Further competitors are expected with English companies and the government watching the introduction of the scheme with interest.
WICS will regulate the process and ensure fair competition amongst the licensees.
